Makeup Crush: Haley Bennett

I have always thought that one of the most timeless, classical and glamourous looks are derived from the pin up girl style of makeup of the 40's and 50's.  Obviously the three main components that generally fuse together to create these looks are the set waves in the hair, the slightly stronger brows and the black flicked eyeliner.  You can go all out and wear a vivid red lip or go modern by wearing a nude lip.  There are so many variations on this look and the Megan Fox pics I used for my last Makeup Crush post were a great example of a contemporary take on the genre.  It's something that still looks fresh, sultry and super feminine.

This week's makeup crush is still pin up and it's the american actress from Marley & Me, Haley Bennett.  This look is so striking but amazingly simple...champagne beige lids, black liquid eyeliner and pillarbox red lips.  I love the contrast between her pale skin and the red lips!  I was just thinking that I would LOVE to dress up as a pin up girl for a fancy dress party so I will have to keep that in mind for the next party I get invited to.  Although I would definitely go for a tamer version as I don't think my husband would let me out of the front door wearing some of the get ups you see in the retro illustrations!

The products used in the above look are as follows:
Chanel Base Lumiere Illuminating Makeup Base
Chanel Pro Lumiere Correcteur Professional Finish Concealer
Chanel Mat Lumiere Long Lasting Soft Makeup
Chanel Ultra Fine Translucent Powder
Chanel Blush Duo Tweed Effect in Tweed Pink
YSL Eyebrow Enhancer Duo in Chestnut Brown
YSL Eyebrow Pencil in Dark Brown
YSL Water Resistant Eyeshadow in Pink Sand
YSL Long Lasting Eye Pencil in Wood Brown
YSL Faux Cils Volume Effect Mascara in High Density Black
Palladio Liquid Eyeliner in Black
Shu Uemura Individual False Eyelashes (Flare/Black)
Chanel Lip Definer in Rouge
Estee Lauder Hydra Lustre Lipstick in Simply Red
Dior Addict Ultra Gloss Reflect Lip Gloss in Red Stockings
YSL Golden Gloss in Simply Gold

In my opinion, there's nothing more glamourous than the pin up hairstyles, whether it's the Veronica Lake style set waves, the classic pin up pomp 'fringe' or the bandana look.  There are tons of tutorials on You Tube to show you how to create looks like these.  Obviously you don't have to make the look too structured and that will ensure that you still look contemporary.

This is a really popular look for celebs like Katy Perry, Dita Von Teese, Christina Aguilera, Megan Fox and Scarlett Johansson.  Katy Perry has really pushed this look into popular culture and often finds new and fun ways to play with it.  The likes of Dita and Christina tend to stay true to the original look.  I like the idea of creating makeup ideas INSPIRED by this look rather than all out copying it to a T.  I think by adding glowy skin and playing around with the colours, you can bring this retro look right into 2010 and easily pair it with current fashion.

I need to do some practice on the hairstyle side of things but I'm currently trying to find the best colour of lipstick to suit my skintone.  I never ever wear a bright lip because to be perfectly honest, I always found it a bit scary.  But now that I have learnt a shedload more about makeup, I feel confident enough to try these things out now.  So over the next few weeks I am going to try some hot pink and bright red lipsticks to find out if I am brave enough to rock a statement lip!

What about you guys, do you lust after this look from yesteryear? Who do you think embodies the pin up girl look the best?

ASOS Purchase & Styling

I was browsing on ASOS the other day and spotted a dress that was SO me that I just had to have it.  It's a pastel lilac panel bandeau dress with a grecian feel to it.  I absolutely adore the sweeping, knotted sashes across the body.  It comes a couple of inches about the knee so it's the perfect length for me.  It's such a flattering fit because the sweetheart neckline compliments my fuller bust and the ruching has a really slimming effect!  The best thing is it only cost £42.

I tried it on as soon as it was delivered and before long, I was mentally styling it with different accessories I have.  I wanted to take you through my thought process I have when I get a new piece of clothing.  I am such a massive OCD clothes geek that I mentally plan what I would wear with the item, even down to the makeup, hair and what shade of nail polish I would team with it.  So I raided my shoes, bags and jewellery and these are the options I came up with...

The shoes above are from Carvela, the bag is from Accessorize and the necklace is from Coast.

The shoes above are from Next, the bag is from Coast, the jewelled bangle is from Debenhams and the thin bangles are from Accessorize.

The above shoes are from Aldo, the bag is from Warehouse, the necklace is from Coast and the cuff is from Next.

The above shoes are from Aldo, the bag is from Oasis, the necklace is from Coast and the ring is from Monsoon.

I think with this dress, loose waves would work best to compliment the femininity of the dress and makeup wise...I'm thinking either a subtlely smokey eye with silvers and greys OR a bridget bardot liquid liner flick with a candy pink lipgloss.  Oooooh the decisions!

As I said, I even plan my outfits down to the nail polish I'm going to wear and I picked out the above four shades in my collection as perfect partners from the gorgeous dress.  (Elf Royal Purple, YSL no.42, Illamasqua Jo'Mina and Essie Bachelorette Bash).

So what about you guys...do you plan your outfits this thoroughly or do you prefer to wing it on the night and choose what comes to hand?

On another matter, I cannot get Rihanna's new song out of my head! It's so damn catchy and I love the feel of the video...the way they have created that pinky, orangey sunset lighting.  That's always a magical time of the day and the location of the video looks incredible!  Apparently they filmed at locations just outside LA and I love the way they have created this colourful wonderland.  It looks amazing with Rihanna's vivid red hair and I'm also loving the retro styling!  Definitely one of the better pop videos around at the moment!

Style Crush: Eva Mendes

I love to watch what the glitterati are wearing because it provides great inspiration for your own outfits.  I would never all out copy someone's look because I am an individual and I like to chop and change things to suit me and my personality/style.  There are certain celebs who never seem to put a fashion foot wrong and Eva Mendes is one of those women.  I love almost everything that she wears because she mixes this retro 50's, feminine look with fluid goddess dresses and simple accessories.  You will never see her laden with jewellery because she opts for the less is more school of thought.   I think it was Coco Chanel who said "When accessorizing, always take off the last thing you put on".   I think that is sound advice!

Her 'grown up' style is classical at times but with a modern twist, be it an acid bright or contemporary silhouette.  Most of the time she favours pastels and neutrals which look amazing against her olive skin.  Her footwear is almost always a neutral shade so they never compete with the gown she is wearing.

She manages to look sexy and chic without showing too much flesh and I think that is the key to real style.  She wears alot of floaty feminine numbers but her figure is also made for 50's style prom dresses and structured shapes...we've ALL seen those Calvin Klein ads!

She knows what suits her and plays on it which makes her a real fashion inspiration for me.  I rarely see her in a dress and think "urgh...what were you thinking??".  I actually really admire people who are consistent in the way they want to look, rather than bending to whatever is in vogue.  To me, it seems ridiculous to wear something that looks unflattering on your figure just because it's in vogue.

What do you reckon to Eva's style?

Caring For Coloured Hair

I haven’t seen my natural hair colour for a long, LONG time. It’s a dark shade of blonde and just very ‘blah’ to be quite honest. I remember hearing the old saying “your natural hair colour will always suit you because it was ‘designed’ to suit your colouring”. What a load of old pants! I definitely suit and look a lot healthier with lighter blonde hair. Believe it or not, I actually experimented with many shades of brunette…cool browns, reddish browns and plummy browns as a teenager with mixed results (I’m sure there’s a bad hair photo archive somewhere!). Once I started getting my hair highlighted when I was about 15, I knew I was on the right track! I was born to be a blonde! My hairdresser even told me once that if I ever came in and asked her to dye my hair brunette, she would refuse to do it!

I just got my hair highlighted yesterday by my lovely hairdresser, Leigh...

So now that I’ve had 12 years of experience when it comes to looking after coloured tresses, one thing I do know is that blondes always have to spend that extra bit of time caring for their hair since the chemicals used to highlight/dye the hair are a lot harsher than our brunette/red head counterparts. However, this is a post dedicated to all hair colours and how to preserve and care for your coloured hair.

PRE-COLOURING HAIR CARE

Ok, so we all know that it’s important to take good care of your hair after you have coloured it, that’s stating the obvious. But, if you want the best possible results, it’s really important to prepare your hair before you colour it, whether you’re going to DIY it with a home dye or take a trip to your hairdresser. Here’s what I do every 6-7 weeks before I get my hair highlighted:

• I always do a deep conditioning treatment the day before getting my hair highlighted to make sure my hair is hydrated and in the best condition to receive the colour. I have started using Phyto Pre-Shampoo Intense Hydrating Oil Treatment (it’s A-mazing!) but I also love Macadamia Healing Oil Treatment. You can just apply either of these to your hair before shampooing, leave for 30 mins, then wash hair and condition as normal. You won’t believe the difference in the condition of your hair afterwards…the shine is incredible!

• If you are on a budget or just don’t want to splash out on treatments, then you can also apply a completely natural, home-made, protein rich treatment made from one avocado with 1 tablespoon of jojoba, grapeseed and coconut oil. Leave it in for 15-20 minutes then shampoo and condition as normal. The advantage of making your own hair care products is that it allows you to have complete control over what goes on your hair. It’s actually really satisfying to know that you are using fresh and pure ingredients on your hair.

• Another home-made treatment that is brilliant is this hot oil treatment for damaged/dry hair:

Ingredients

1/2 cup organic soybean oil or organic sunflower oil

8 drops oil of sandalwood

8 drops oil of lavender

8 drops oil of geranium
Mix all the above ingredients together and then warm oil to a comfortable temperature. Apply the mixture to damp hair. I like to wrap my hair in a plastic cap and then apply a hot towel for 20-30 minutes. Then I just shampoo the mixture out and condition as normal.

• You can also just buy pure Coconut Oil and this alone can be used to treat hair in the same way.

• Lastly, always make sure you get a trim when you get your hair coloured, even if you’re trying to grow it. If you don’t, the ends of your hair will REALLY suffer. I mean, who wants long hair with scraggy ends? Not me! By trimming a smidgen off, your hair will be more manageable and the worst of your split ends will be dealt with. Your hair colour will look SO much fresher when your hair looks and feels healthy.

POST COLOURING HAIR CARE

So you have coloured your hair or had it coloured for you. Taking special care of your coloured hair will help to preserve the colour for longer, add healthy shine and make sure your hair is soft and manageable. Here’s what I do to help my hair on it’s way:

• Static is always a big problem if you colour your hair and especially if your hair is fine. To reduce the static, you should always use a thermal protecting product when blow-drying to minimise damage to your hair. I really like Paul Mitchell Hot Off The Press Thermal Protection Spray.

• It’s important to use a moisturising shampoo that’s suited to your hair colour to avoid stripping further moisture from the hair. I switch between using Loreal Professionnel Shine Blonde Shampoo (which is a purple colour to brighten my blonde and counteract any brassiness) and Sebastian Penetraitt Shampoo to strengthen my hair. Brunettes could use something like the John Frieda Brilliant Brunette range. These specially developed shampoos do not strip away the natural moisture from your hair and also help to keep the colour soft and fresh.

• I deep condition or treat my hair with oils religiously at LEAST once a week to rebuild moisture levels in my hair. Coloured hair can become really dry if you don’t treat it in this way. I use the oil/natural treatments as mentioned above but I have found that my favourite shop bought treatment for coloured hair is Kerastase Chroma Riche Masque.

That stuff is just incredible! I finished my current tub of it last week so I have ordered more from Lookfantastic.com straight away…I just cannot live without it. I leave it on my hair after shampooing for around 5 minutes and it just makes my hair feel heavenly…so soft and silky yet so volumised…the perfect combination and the shine it imparts is out of this world. It’s a must have for coloured hair and fantastic as a pre-party treatment if you want your hair to look amazing (and lets face it…when would you NOT want your hair to look amazing???).

• I try not to blow dry my hair every day and when I do, I never use the hot setting to avoid heat damage. It’s best to try and let your hair dry naturally as much as possible to keep it in the best condition.

• Coloured hair tends to be more brittle and slightly weaker so I’m always really careful when combing my wet hair after a shower. I always use a wide-toothed comb instead of a brush to avoid tearing my hair to pieces.

• I truly believe that what you put into your body makes a huge difference to your skin and hair so if you want your hair to look hydrated, you have to make sure you drinks loads of water. I know it’s clichéd and boring but thems are the rules to nice hair and skin. The condition of your hair is an sure fire indication of your general state of health. Hydrated hair means that the colour will last for longer!

• Limit the changes you make to your hair colour as much as possible. Each time you change your hair colour, more chemicals are needed to achieve the desired effect, and more chemicals means more damage to your hair. So, by gradually changing your hair you are giving it the time it needs to repair itself and deal with the chemicals at a manageable level.

• Always rinse your hair well after shampoo and conditioner. This will prevent a build up of product residue on your hair that will just make it look dull and lank. It’s a good idea to spend the last 10 to 15 seconds of your shower using a cooler setting to seal the hair and add shine…if you can stand it that is!

Have you got any great natural hair remedies or amazing products for coloured hair?

Urban Woman Jewellery & Nars Review

Hi guys, well I'm still battling with the remnants of the Rodial fake tan disaster...no matter how much I scrub my wrists and hands, the patches remain! I will just have to sit it out until the tan fades!
Anyways, on a lighter note, I just wanted to show you some jewellery that I was sent recently by a company called Urban Woman.  They are an online jewellery store with affordable prices and some really nice pieces.
I love this silver bangle, it's so simple but it's great to layer with other bangles on your wrist.  The mother of pearl effect on it is really pretty and the fastening hinge is so discreet and secure.  This is going to sound stupid but it's really satisfying to clip it together...I find myself playing with it just to hear it click.  I have been wearing it non-stop!  I have had a few comments on it already so it obviously catches people's eye.  The best thing is, it's only £15.00 so I am going to go buy a couple more so I can wear them together.
The second piece is totally different from the first but I love the tougher edge it has with the leather straps and steel details.  It's great for casual wear and it has a unique design that really stands out.  It's only £9.99 and I think that is a really decent price.  The bracelet itself feels well made and sturdy which is good because I can often be a bit clumsy when taking jewellery off!

Have you bought anything from this site? What did you think of the products/customer service?

The other thing I wanted to talk about today was the new product from Nars, the Soft Touch Shadow Pencil in Skorpios, which is described as an iridescent copper on the Nars website.  You can use these jumbo pencils to line, shade the lid or highlight.  I love this colour, it's so intense and looks amazing smudged on the eye as a base, pushed into the lashline or highlighting the inner corners of the eyes.
The formulation is smooth in texture and easy to blend.  It's long lasting and the pigmentation is fantastic.  There are two other shades that I would love to try, Aigle Noir - the black shade infused with gold shimmer and Goddess - a glistening pink champagne.  The black one would look amazing if used as part of a smokey eye and the pink champagne would be perfection for highlighting!
I love jumbo pencils and I use my bronzey brown Jemma Kidd one all the time.  They are brilliant to smudge along the lashline for a bit of daytime definition and you don't have to be too exact.  Just use a cotton bud to blend into the lid and you're good to go!  I reach for mine every day when I don't have time to faff around with liquid liners.  They are £15 each and I think that is reasonable given the amount of time they last and how useful they are.

Have you tried these Nars Soft Touch Shadow Pencils? What did you think?

Review Of Rodial Brazilian Tan Dark

I am definitely a girl who likes to have a golden glow at all times.  I don't think there's anything wrong with that in the winter months as long as you keep it on the lighter side to avoid looking too tanned. During the cold months I tend to stick to gradual tanners to get the colour I want and then use St Tropez or Xen Tan if I have a night out.  You can always get away with a little bit more colour at night time.
I have heard alot about Rodial's self tanner in the press and on blogs and since I received a sample of this a while ago, I decided to give it a bash.  I wouldn't normally choose to apply "the darkest tan on the market" given my penchant for airing on the lighter side.  But purely for experimental purposes, I went ahead and tried it out last night so you guys can see how it worked out.  This product is paraben free, contains no chemical colours and will apparently help to tighten and tone the skin.  It contains Bergamont and Coconut Oil and is scented with Gardenia.  It has loads of celebrity fans including Cheryl Cole, Jessica Simpson, Gisele, Eva Longoria and Eva Mendes.
Now first of all, to give you some background, I am a very experienced self tanner and I have been bronzing it up since I was about 16, so around 11 years now.  Self tan has come along way since my teenage, amateur endeavours!  I always exfoliate thoroughly, moisturise, wait around half an hour and THEN apply the self tan wearing surgical gloves to avoid staining my hands.  The bottle has a pump for ease of application and the formulation is a tinted cream/gel with a light texture.  So on applying the Rodial Brazilian Tan Dark, the tint makes it easy to see where the product is and if you have missed any bits.  It did take slightly longer than normal to blend it into the skin as I'm used to mousse formulas that blend/dry within 30 seconds.  The cream/gel smells slightly of Coconut and Gardenia so it's quite pleasant.  I would say that I very much prefer mousse formulas for the simple fact that they are easier to apply, you use less product and they dry alot quicker so there's no hanging around for ages.
I applied the Rodial self tanner right before bed and left it on overnight to develop.  I always find that's the most full proof way of making sure you get an even, streakless tan.  I woke up in the morning and quickly checked my reflection to see how dark the tan actually was and it's definitely a shade or two darker than St Tropez or Xen Tan.  I must admit that it's just too dark for my liking...there's only so much you can get away with in Aberdeen!

I didn't notice the usual biscuity fake tan smell the morning after so that was a bonus.  All was going well until I discovered the streaks and uneven patches on my hands....
I don't know how this happened because I wore gloves to apply the self tan and then when I took them off, I ran the gloves over the backs of my hands and blended it all in with moisturiser...exactly how I normally do.  I never ever end up with streaks or uneven bits normally and I kind of pride myself on that!  So I was shocked to see the state of my hands/wrists....
The only thing I can think of is that the formula is harder to blend in so once it makes contact with your skin, you can't really blend it out like you can with mousse formulas.  This is a big set back!  Being a perfectionist, it really annoys me that I will have to put up with these fake tan stains on my hands and wrists until it fades.  The product is marketed as being the longest lasting self tan on the market because it lasts for 10 days.  I may have to try scrubbing my hands over the next couple of days!

So in conclusion, this self tan would be good for anyone who is searching for a really dark tan and someone who doesn't mind paying £39.00 for a 150ml bottle.  Please just bear in mind that you have to be super careful and meticulous with the application!  However, if like me, you prefer a more subtle glow and prefer a fuss free application process, then I would give this product a miss.  I guess I just prefer a self tanner that I can apply quickly and not have to worry about whether it will look good or not.  I don't want to gamble the day before I have to go to something important.  I have used St Tropez Mousse and Xen Tan Mousse for a couple of years now and I will be sticking to them to get the shade that's right for me.

Good Times/Bad Times

1) I went round to my pal's place to catch up with another old friend who is getting married next year.  Somehow we ended up talking about male celebs you shouldn't fancy, but you secretly do!  Now that is always a fun conversation!  We all have secret crushes on weird or unlikely celebs but would NEVER let on to anyone that we think that way because first off, it can be mortally emabarassing and secondly, you know you would never hear the end of it.  So in the name of laughs, here are some male celebs I secretly think are quite hot in an out-of-the-ordinary kind of way...

Jesse Eisenberg - He's the star of the new film, The Social Network and he isn't a stereotypical movie stud but for some reason I really like him! He just seems very intelligent, he comes across as really sweet in interviews and he's a little bit geeky which I find endearing!
Alex Zane - He's a British comedian, tv presenter and all round indie kid.  Now this one may not seem so strange but if you knew my taste in men, then you would know that I don't tend to be attracted to guys who wear guyliner and paint their nails with black polish.  I tend to prefer the more outwardly macho men.  He was around before Russell Brand and it always seems like Russell is an exaggerated version of Alex.  He's articulate, sensitive, funny and he could help you with yor weekly manicure!ha ha.
Paddy McGuinness - He's a British stand up comedian and tv presenter.  I've always had a thing for Paddy...probably because I love Northern folk and their sense of humour.  He is macho, with a masculine broad build and although he isn't in tip top condition i.e. ripped...he still looks like the kind of guy who could sweep you up and protect you!  I love a guy who can make me laugh and Paddy is so 'normal' and down to earth, you can't help but like him.
Michael Madsen - Every girl loves a bad boy and Michael is definitely one of those.  He had that James Dean look about him when he was younger, like in the pic below.  Although years of alcohol and drug abuse have taken their toll on his looks, I can't help but hanker back to the time when he looked like this...
Ben Batt - He is a British actor who starred in the popular tv show, Shamelss, set in a Manchester council estate.  I don't know if it's the fact that he plays a bad boy and is a bit of a 'knacker' as my Chris would say but I can't help but feel an attraction towards him!  It's the age old female downfall...being attracted to a guy who is arrogant and loves himself! (I'm sure he's lovely in real life though!)

Which unlikely celebs do you secretly lust after?  Luckily, I ended up with the best bloke in the world so not even Brad Pitt could match up to my hubby :)  (feel free to throw up now).

2) I went to the cinema on Saturday night to see The Social Network and I have to say that I really enjoyed it.  The script was great, the 'story' was engaging and the acting was fantastic.  Jesse Eisenberg was brilliant as Facebook entrepreneur, Mark Zuckerberg and Justin Timberlake did a great job of portraying Napster creator, Sean Parker.  I forgot he was Justin Timberlake and just saw the character so that's always a good sign.  I also loved the dark, moody soundtrack which was produced by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails.  I always read up on the true story behind these films as I know sometimes they elaborate things for entertainment purposes.  It seems that most of the story is true but what they did fail to mention is that it has been speculated for some time that Mark Zuckerberg has a form of Autism that prevents him from functioning in a social manner.  This type of autism may have blessed him with a tremendous amount of intelligence/genius but it prevents him from being able to communicate to people in a normal social environment i.e. he finds it difficult to hold normal conversation and often comes across as cold, rude or disinterested.  I think that's an important point to remember given how badly he is portrayed in the film.

3) I, like many people, Sky Plus'd the Cheryl Cole interview with Piers Morgan from Saturday night.  Now although I have felt lately that she is over-exposed, I am still interested to hear what she had to say about her Malaria scare and the end of her marriage to footballer, Ashley Cole.  I have been completely open about the fact that I have nothing against the girl because I don't know her personally so it would be unfair of me to judge her.  I guess a bug bear for me is sometimes that celebrities complain about the amount of press they get but if they really didn't want to be famous anymore, they could stop doing interviews, stop doing gigs and just do something else instead.  They are in a privileged position to live a luxurious lifestyle and the sacrifice for that lifestyle is that you have to put up with the fact that everyone will want to know your business.  Maybe that is harsh but that's life.  That aside, I really felt like this interview with Cheryl gave us an insight into what she really went through and I also felt that the tears she shed during the interview were real.  Seeing her as a real person with real problems made me warm to her.  She has been through alot and I hope she finds happiness soon.

1) My lovely husband left this morning to work offshore on an oil rig so I am going to miss him like crazy for the next 2 weeks.  He will be on rotation for the next 6 months so he will be working 2 weeks on the rig and then he gets 2 weeks holiday.  The up side to this is that I get him all to myself for 2 weeks.  It just sucks that we have to be apart when we only just got married!  The pic above was taken at the pre-wedding BBQ, the day before we tied the knot in Loch Lomond.  This typical behaviour for Chris, he was trying to be romantic and I was clinging on for dear life!ha ha.  He makes me laugh and I will really miss his company because he's my best friend.
2) I don't know what is wrong with me but I am addicted to trashy 'reality' tv at the moment, whether it's Keeping Up With The Kardashians, The Hills re-runs, The Only Way Is Essex or Jerseylicious.  I know they're unbelievably fake, contrived and ridiculous but they fuel my need for silly drama that I don't have in my everyday life...thank god! I'm sure each episode of the above shows kill off a few brain cells every time I watch but they are my guilty pleasure and I know for a fact that I'm not the only one who secretly watches them!
